Lights on Broadway

Last night I had the pleasure of hearing Brian Stokes Mitchell introduce Lights on Broadway, a love letter posing as an alphabet book.  Mr. Mitchell, the Tony-award winning Broadway star, sang the song, “I Was Here,” from the book’s accompanying CD, and his voice certainly brought the otherwise non-descript hotel conference room to life.

Lights on Broadway was written by Harriet Ziefert and illustrated by Elliot Kreloff. Kreloff’s illustrations are terrific. Exuberant and somewhat retro-feeling, they perfectly capture the excitement and joy of the stage. What comes across most clearly is how much Mitchell, Ziefert and Kreloff treasure the theater. I love books where you can really feel the creator’s passion for their subject, and this is one of them. This is the perfect gift for every theater-loving person in your life—regardless of their age.
