The kids have spoken and the results have been validated by the library staff. The winner is……The Pigeon books! It was close. Elephant and Piggie gave the Pigeon a run for his money, but in the end….the Pigeon flew!
After a year of hearing requests to “read anything by Mo Willems,” we decided to call for elections. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students were each given a penny to drop into a cup next to their favorite series – Knuffle Bunny, Elephant & Piggie, or the Pigeon Books. As you can see from the picture, the students took their democratic responsibilities quite seriously. There was discussion, changing of minds, peer pressure, and lobbying. Many of them had trouble committing to one of the cups, and several students said what many of us were thinking – how do you choose one over the others!
Leading up to the election, the Pigeon – and his friend, the Duckling – had the advantage of a new book that is very popular right now – The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? That last burst of positive attention may have swung things in the Pigeon’s favor – but if Elephant & Piggie had a Super Pac, the results could have been very different.
