Today was the first day back at school after a two-week vacation. This is not a complaint, just a fact: it was busy. Teachers beginning new units. Students checking out books that support the new unit. An overwhelming number of returned books – literally, the stacks were toppling over. So…I’m running around checking things off the list when a little girl walks into the library. I go over to say hello, while admittedly, trying to anticipate her request. She looks up and says, “I just wanted to wish you a happy spring.” Wow. That will slow you down every time. Without any intent to do so, this 6-year-old girl reminded me to take a breath and remember what I love most about my work.
In keeping with her greeting, here is a list of picture books for young children about spring. All of the books listed below are about the delight of waiting for seeds to pop out of the ground, the anticipation of those first warm days, and the joy of watching the hard brown earth turn to green. Books about spring, by the way, were high on the request list today!
