The Perfect Summer Read-Alouds

We’ve been hearing a lot about heat domes and heat indices, and it all sounds bad. There didn’t appear to be a silver lining – until today when I read Mo Willems’ new story about his beloved characters, Elephant and Piggie.  The best friends have already earned Frog and Toad-like affection from the 3 to 6 crowd, and now, just in time for 100 degree days, there are two charming and amusing stories were made for each other.

Should I Share My Ice Cream? by Mo Willems and “Ice Cream” (one of the stories in Frog and Toad All Year) by Arnold Lobel are such a perfect story time combination that I’m tempted to call our kindergarten students back to school for an hour this week.  Since that probably wouldn’t go over too well, I will make do by encouraging librarians and summer camp staff to connect these two stories with some hot kids. In “Ice Cream” the two friends try to share an ice cream cone with messy results. There is a similar scenario in Willems’ book. Both have happy endings.

You know what the perfect snack would be for this story time! Don’t forget the jimmies…
