Clara Lee and the Apple Pie Dream by Jenny Han

This is usually how it goes. They begin with the Clementine series – a smart choice. Sara Pennypacker’s series of books about Clementine are perfect for kids ready to read chapter books. Then, they continue to the Ivy and Bean series by Annie Barrows. And, of course, they fly through all of Megan McDonald’s books about Judy Moody. But, now…in what I hope is the first in a new series, comes Clara Lee. Clara Lee and the Apple Pie Dream by Jenny Han will be pressed upon all of those kids who are looking for another engaging story about family and friends.

Clara Lee, the star of this new book, is looking forward to her favorite event of the year, the Apple Blossom Festival. She is especially interested in running for Little Miss Apple Pie.  The book is full of appealing characters, especially Clara Lee’s grandfather who guides his young granddaughter gently and wisely.  What makes this book feel especially right is that Clara Lee narrates her own story. She is imaginative and sincere and “real.”  I’m looking forward to reading the further adventures of Clara Lee!
