Having the day off gave me an opportunity to look at A Family of Readers: The Book Lover’s Guide to Children and Young Adult Literature by Roger Sutton and Martha Parravano. I just spent over an hour with this treasure trove of essays and book lists and then cleared a space on my go-to reference shelf. There are many big name contributors here and the articles and lists – echoing the life of a child – are organized into four sections:
Reading to Them
Reading With Them
Reading on Their Own
Leaving Them Alone
Also, don’t skip ahead to the book lists and miss Gregory Maguire’s foreword. His observation about Calvin (of Calvin and Hobbes fame) and his book-loving parents is delightful. If you are the parent of a young child, this book will give you ideas for today right through high school graduation!
