Three for Thursday

It’s July 1, and the long holiday weekend is right around the corner.  Hopefully, your Fourth of July weekend will include seeing fireworks, going to a parade, watching Wimbledon and the World Cup, and reading!  If you want to share books with your children that will help them to understand the reason for the hoopla and the store sales, here are 2 sets of 3…

For the youngest children, these books are light-hearted, but accessible and enjoyable stories about the Fourth of July:

Fourth of July Mice! by Bethany Roberts (For the youngest readers – happy mice celebrating the day…)

John, Paul, George & Ben by Lane Smith  (One of the greatest titles in children’s books! This book can be a bit confusing without a sense of the history, but it’s lots of fun for child and adult – especially Beatles fans…)

Apple Pie Fourth of July by Janet Wong (A Chinese-American girl celebrates her first Fourth of July)

For an older child (grades 3-5), these books explain the events that led to our mid-summer holiday:

Shh! We’re Writing the Constitution by Jean Fritz

A More Perfect Union: The Story of Our Constitution by Betsy and Giulio Maestro

George vs. George: The American Revolution As Seen from Both Sides by Rosalyn Schanzer
