Take Me Out to the Ball Game!

I wasn’t a baseball fan before moving to Boston, but now consider myself a proud member of Red Sox Nation.  I grew up in Cincinnati Reds territory, but their fans don’t hold a candle to the loyalty and passion of Red Sox fans.  And now that a new season is upon us, it all begins again.  Today is baseball day at Inly.  The kids and teachers are wearing their Red Sox shirts, and there are even a few Yankees shirts being worn by kids who want to sit by themselves (in a corner) all day long.

In that spirit, here are ten terrific baseball books.  I chose these books for the 3rd through 5th grade baseball fan.  At that point, you’re in the middle of your baseball reading – leaving the world of Curious George Plays Baseball and moving into the excellent Mike Lupica and John Feinstein novels.  The nonfiction for middle grade readers is particularly strong.  Here are ten good ones:

Ballpark: The Story of America’s Baseball Fields by Lynn Curlee

Shoeless Joe and Black Betsy by Phil Bildner

The Shot heard’ Round the World by Phil Bildner

No Easy Way: The Story of Ted Williams and the Last .400  Season by Fred Bowen

Henry Aaron’s Baseball Dream by Matt Tavares

Teammates by Peter Goldenbock

Baseball Saved Us by Ken Mochizuki

We are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball by Kadir Nelson

Roberto Clemente: Pride of the Pittsburgh Pirates by Jonah Winter

All Star!: Honus Wagner and the Most Famous Baseball Card Ever by Jane Yolen
